About TMJ Therapy
Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a disorder affecting the jaw at the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). TMD causes the joint located beneath the ears to tighten, causing pain and discomfort while chewing, speaking, or yawning. Beyond Smiles Dental Care in Fort Worth, TX offers TMJ therapy using functional appliances. These functional appliances help by repositioning the jaw to hold it in a better position, thus reducing and possibly eliminating the pain. Dr. Edwina Evangelista, a board-certified dentist, helps patients relieve the pain and discomfort of TMD with customized TMJ therapy treatments.
What to Expect
During the patient's exam, Dr. E will review their condition and carefully listen to specific concerns, including their symptoms and how long they have been occurring. Dr. E will also perform a series of diagnostic tests and take X-rays of the patient's jaw to assess the underlying cause of the pain. Dr. E may suggest simple adjustments in the patient's lifestyle or eating habits such as, avoiding hard candy, gum, and wearing a night guard to protect the teeth from grinding. However, if these adjustments don't ease the patient's pain, Dr. E may recommend a functional appliance.
Recovery and symptoms will vary from patient to patient, however, it's important to follow all post-treatment care instructions carefully. No matter the procedure, common pain management steps and strategies will be provided to help relax the patient's jaw and reduce discomfort. Practical tips such as, chewing food on both sides of the mouth when eating and avoiding putting pressure or lying down on the jaw for long periods of time will help. Gently massaging the facial muscles and using an ice pack may also ease discomfort. Dr. Evangelista may also provide prescription muscle relaxers to help.
The cost of your TMJ/TMD therapy treatment will rely on the type of treatment received and the coverage the patient's dental insurance provides. However, Beyond Smiles Dental Care is committed to making sure all our patients receive the maximum coverage possible and will confirm their benefits before any billing takes place.
